These are Stephen Wong’s (@SW064351 on Twitter) favorite races from last year:
Blue Diamond Stakes (Australia) – Miracles Of Life (2/23/13)
The feel-good story of the year where a pint-sized filly from Southern Australia came, saw, and conquered the Darley/Peter Moody juggernauts to win Victoria’s richest two-year-old race. Having retired after breaking her leg and pelvis in separate falls, this was one of the greatest comebacks made by apprentice jockey Lauren Stojakovic.
Dubai Gold Cup (Dubai) – Cavalryman (3/30/13)
After watching this veteran galloper run admirably in some of the most prestigious staying contests around the globe, it was breath-taking watching him treat his rivals with contempt here.
The Chairman’s Trophy (Hong Kong) – Packing Whiz (4/7/13)
Plagued by internal problems, trainer Caspar Fownes was able to get this talented son of Trade Fair right on the day. After waiting patiently in the straight for a run, Packing Whiz dashed through the gap with a paralyzing turn of foot, clocking a final 400m in 21.97 seconds to claim his first Hong Kong Group Two.
Sires’ Produce Stakes (Australia) – Guelph (4/13/13)
Tremendous run to overcome a wide draw and beat Golden Slipper winner Overreach. Has already won the Tea Rose and Flight this term and will have every chance to win the Champion Filly Three-Year-Old award.
110-85 Class One Handicap (Hong Kong) – Mizani (4/14/13)
Tackling idiosyncratic Happy Valley for the first time, Mizani made a mess of the start and was taken back to last but yet was still able to weave through a checkered passage to score an improbable win.
Honorable mention: The Victorian Jockey Harlem Shake
and the video that went around the racing world in eighty seconds…
